Water Conservation in our Harare Factory

Mar 23, 2017

Water scarcity is a major challenge in Zimbabwe.  However, Nestlé Harare Factory is addressing all efforts to sustainably manage this precious resource.
Since the commissioning of the Factory's Waste Water Treatment Plant in July 2016, some of the treated waste water is being used to water the gardens in the surrounding area of the Waste Water Treatment Plant.
There are future plans to use the treated waste water for other activities and improvement projects have been made in a bid to reduce water consumption in the factory and a 21% reduction in water consumption per ton of product was achieved in 2016.
As we celebrate the World Water Day, the focus should not just be at workplace level. There are a number of things we can do to save water in our homes such as:
    1. Turning off the tap while brushing teeth
    2. Fixing  leaks immediately
    3. Taking a shorter shower. Shower can use anything between 6 and 45 litres per minute
    4. Watering your garden with a watering can rather than a hosepipe. A hosepipe uses 1,000 litres of water an hour
    5. Placing a cistern displacement device in your toilet cistern to reduce the volume of water used in each flush.
