Nestlé Congo participated in the 9th COMESA Business Partnerships Forum & Linkages Fair held on 21 – 22 February, 2014.
Opening remarks were provided by the Secretary General of COMESA, President of the Federation des Entreprises du Congo (FEC), and DRC Minister of Economy & Trade, acting for the Prime Minister.
During the 2 day forum, Franck Otete, Regulatory & Scientific Affairs/Corporate Affairs Manager at Nestlé Congo participated by discussing 2 key topics:
The Dynamics of Chains – from product to market
Promoting Authentic African Products – supporting COMESA origin products into regional markets
Key points highlighted were on our success story of establishing Nestlé footprint in the Congo, leveraging our corporate values and principles and creating value for the community. MAGGI® business and our operations linked to the Kingabua factory served as illustration to show our holistic approach of delivering quality products, developing our people and making sure all business stakeholders’ expectations are taken in account in the value chain.
On the second topic, Franck stressed the importance of benchmarking industry best practices. This included food safety (as a key priority); safety assessment needs (commodities sourced in Africa) - these should be based on international standards; the need to enhance harmonization of standards & technical regulations regionally (EAC/COMESA/SADC) and internationally (Codex); aligning & meeting regional standards to enhance volume of intra-EAC/COMESA/SADC trade.
The recommendations from the forum will be submitted for consideration at the 17th Heads of States and Governments Summit under the theme, Consolidating intra – COMESA trade through micro, small and medium enterprises development, from 26-27 February, 2014.
