Addressing Barriers to the East African Cluster

On Wednesday, 20 November, 2013, Nestlé Kenya in collaboration with the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce & Industry sponsored a business luncheon & forum to discuss the Enhancement of Exports by addressing Barriers to EAC and International Trade. In attendance were key government and business stakeholders. The forum provided an opportunity for us to highlight challenges faced in exporting to East African countries.

The Chief Guest was Ms. Anne Waiguri, Cabinet Secretary for Devolution and Planning who highlighted strategies and policies being put in place by Government to unlock exports in intra-EAC Trade.

Nestlé Kenya MD, Svetlana Obruchkova highlighted the investment the company had made in Kenya with the aim of increasing export capacity to EAC. She urged the government to address some of the challenges affecting investment & regional trade in EAC, including high CET on manufacturing inputs, unfavorable Duty Remission scheme & non-tariff barriers to trade.

In his address, the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce Chairman, Mr Kiprono Kittony said the Chamber believes that a substantial increase in our exports is one of the key factors in improving the economic performance of the country.

The forum brought together the government and business community for high level engagement and discussions.  Panel sessions were facilitated by representatives from the Kenya Bureau of Standards and Trademark East Africa among others.  Also present, from the Nairobi County Governor’s office was Ms Anna Othoro, County Executive, Trade, Industrialization, Cooperative Development and Tourism.
